Two songs from Viser fra Reisen uploaded

I have uploaded two songs from Viser fra Reisen which I have been allowed to release despite the problematic nature of the record as a whole. Please note though, that these tunes are not mixed as loudly as most of the other tunes in your collection. This is in order to retain the dynamic range of the music and increase the listening experience. Please, use your volume knob. You can find the tunes in the "Releases" section.

Downloadables, discography and bootlegs

During the latter part of 2009, we believed we were on a path of total reformation, so we hid all downloadables on the website, since they were not in accord with what we were doing at the time. Later however, we realized that this reformed Elvarhøi was not a stable unit, forcing us to break it in two. With the reformed band now as a seperate band, the downloadables are again more or less in tune with our vision, or at least represent a past we will not be ashamed of. Therefore, we have again filled out our discography section with releases previously hid under the table, but now freely available again. Note also that live bootlegs are available in the concerts section.

While we wait for the album

Some of you may be wondering what in the world is going on in the Elvarhøi-camp. Are they doing anything at all? Are they split up? Where is the demo that was left unreleased two years ago? Why all the delays?

Well, the truth is that the band has indeed split up. But it is not dead. It is just that we are twice the band we used to be (as in, "we are two bands now"). So some of the band has moved on to other pastures. Kièrs is studying in Scotland, so she is out for now at least, and Are has quit to focus on the other band and the numerous other projects he finds much more interesting than what we do. Such things happen. He has been in the band for 5 years now, and he always was the outsider, so it is no great wonder we have drifted totally separate ways.

In brighter news, amongst all the tumults of the split, we have gotten Sean Murphy on board as a flutist.

We have started work on the new album "Mens vi venter på tidevannet" (while we wait for the tide). My hopes are great for this one. It shall be both a lament of what we have lost, and a celebration of what we have gained. A sobbing defeat against the jaws of industry, and a roaring battle-cry for the young and angry. We have a track list almost ready, for which all the material is written. We are not quite decided on how we are planning to approach the recording yet, so so far, we are just working on playing the songs together and getting a good groovy group feel to it. Once we have that, and our studio is finally built, we will start preliminary recordings to see what actually works and what does no t.

Ihave started writing an overarching storyline to the album, which will probably be included in the booklet if things go as I have planned, and work on the artwork is already in progress.

With love,

Progress on the production of our new demo

There's been a lot of back and forth lately with things changing all the time and too much uncertainty to be able to make any statements to the outside world. But now things are beginning to move more steady again. Most of the material is written and we'll soon begin the process of learning them.

In related news: due to conceptual differences, Are has had to end his engagement in the band. If you, like I, loved all the stuff he brought to the band, you're in luck, for we have formed a new band to follow the new concept which features all of the Elvarhøi-members from before the split. Stay tuned for more news on this.

Looking for a secound guitarist to complete our lineup

Elvarhøi is trying to build up our best line-up yet, and we're really closing in on that goal. Now we only need a secound guitarist and we're there! We need someone who can play both crushing riffs as well as a neat folkish acoustic guitar. Anyone interested can send us an e-mail at post@elvarhoi.com Once we have you, we can finally go on and conquer the live-stages of the world!

The road to a complete lineup

Good morning, everyone! We've been trying out with possible new members lately and we've found ourselves a nice young lady to sing and play piano with us. Her name is Ina Kièrstine Olsen and she's incredibly creative and has a great voice of a kind that we've never tried before. I believe her to have the most fitting voice we've ever tried and I'm really looking forward to playing more with her!

Greetings and good news from the forest of Krokskogen

It's late evening in Krokskogen as I'm writing this, and the trees are finally covered in snow. It's not weighing them down heavily just yet, but it's enough to make the mood of the forest just perfect enough for the news I'm about to bring. Come on, take a good guess! This is an easy one! One try only!

Got it? Oh, yes! We've gone ahead and done it at last. We've found ourselves a new guy to hide behind the six-strings. His name is Christopher Rakkestad and he hails from the same herað as Ivar and myself. He's a talented guy, both behind the guitar as well as the microphone which makes this really exciting as we finally have a compentent male singer again.

He's interested in bringing more metal to our metal side and will do so by producing crushing riffs, which we've been too sparing on eariler. So get ready to get folked, the next venture will be heavy!

Guitarists needed

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Elvarhøi finds itself without a single guitarist in our permanent lineup. Our current lead guitarist has moved to England and it has proven impossible for us to work with that distance. We are now, therefore, more concerned than ever with finding guitarists to play with. If you would like to play with us, contact us now!

http://www.elvarhoi.com/MySpace/gitarsample.mp3

Et liveopptak:
http://www.elvarhoi.com/media/originals/20080106/04SkogensVandrar.mp3

News

Ane has been discharged of all duties as a flautist. Her status as 'member of Elvarhøi' reverts to 'friend of Elvarhøi'.

The demo I spoke about in the last entry is progressing. Only instruments left now are vocals and some rerecordings of various other instruments. The tracklist is probably as follows:

1. Endekvad (The song of the end)
2. Eg har sakna min heim (I've been longing for my home)
3. Intro
4. Trú (Faith/Faithful)
5. Æra (Honour/Era)
6. Kjærleik (Love)
7. Skogens Vandrar (The forest wanderer)
8. Fortidens Skygger (The shadows of the past)

Tracks 3-6 are all part of the same song cycle.

Bad news and good news

On the 26th of january, Gustav Jørgen played his last concert as an official member of Elvarhøi. It was as worthy a goodbye-concert as can be, as Sub Scene hosted the most sentimental and rocking Elvarhøi-concert to date. Through almost three years, Gustav Jørgen has been one of our key members, providing passionate vocals and a positive vibe to the band and we are sorry to see him go. But we do live on. For this concert was also the secound (the first being earlier that day) concert with Nora as a singer, so as old blood is washed away, new blood streams in. This is not the total end for the collaberation between Gustav Jørgen and Elvarhøi as he will still provide his expertice as a session-musician from time to time. Those who want to keep following the musical path of Gustav Jørgen would be adviced to check out Les Ténèbres at http://www.myspace.com/lestenebres

Incidentally, this day was also the day for the completion of our very first proper music video, directed by Henrik Zahl Andersen from the Noroff Institute. It is freely available on YouTube, and we will upload it to Stage6 and provide a link from this very site.

Drums... Drums in the woods...

We just got home from the woods where we did the first test recordings for the drums on our new album! Instead of micing up each drum separately in a studio, we sat up a drumset in the middle of a frozen marsh about half an hour into the woods and I sat down in the snow at the edge of a nearby woodside (approx. 20 metres from the set) with two directional mics, each aimed slightly to each side of the set. We did test drums for two songs (Daudeskaar and Endekvad) and the sound was marvellous, but the recording suffered from several things such as bad monitoring and night. On the weekend of 11-13 of january we'll be going back with the knowledge we gained today and do it properly.

Many News!

Keeping both the English and the Norwegian site updated became an unneccesary bother, so I took the norwegian one down. At the same time I updated the site somewhat. The forum and gallery are still not working, but I've made a new press-section, made the concert-section more throughout with better info about the locations of gigs, setlists of past gigs and bootlegs of past gigs. I've added a new release to the album-section, which is a re-release of Fjellet Faller Aldri, remixed, with added bonus-tracks and for free download. In the band section I've updated the biography and last, but not least, I'd like you all to welcome the newest member of the Elvarhøi-clan, Nora Krågebakk.

Love, Elvarhøi.

So we´re back at last!

The website has been down because of server-problems, but it's finally been taken care of. During the short year that's gone by, a series of things have happened to Elvarhøi. Fjellet Faller Aldri was sold out over half a year ago and we've gotten much good critique on our work. Espen has returned from the military, so now we're all finally gathered for the first time in quite a long time! We've also played our first gig in over two years. This took place at "Huset" Youth Culture Center at Nøtterøy 21.09.07. The audience might have been small, but the atmosphere was excellent! The band had a great time and we got a lot of good response afterwards.

Elvarhøi is now planning to do a few gigs this autumn and hopefully some more in the new year. More updates will come!

The concert-list as it stands now is:

13.10.07 - Trikkehallen
10.11.07 - Stoppestedet

From then on, we'll be playing some new songs, that are gonna be on the next EP. See you!

Fjellet Faller Aldri

The date for the release of this release is closing and I now want to say a couple of words about this record.

I first want to mention that "Fjellet Faller Aldri", or "The Mountain Shall Never Fall" as it can be translated into, does not have any intentional overall theme. It is a collection of seven songs written under different circumstances with the focus on that perticular song and only that, without any consideration for the other songs. The songs are therefore quite varied. As a result, this is an album you don't have to listen to from start to end. You can easily pick out the songs you like best and hear them on their own without loosing their meaning. The record comes with a 20 page booklet filled with beautiful illustrations by the talented artist Sara Bruun, specially drawn for Elvarhøi. We know an elaborate booklet like this is not usual for a demo-release, and that it's often viewed in a bad light, but we don't really care. I, who has been in charge of the making of the booklet, like puzzling with things like this and happen to think a good booklet is quite fancy.

"Eg rodde meg ut.." (I rowed out..) was an idea put forth by Gustav to be a song we could have some fun with playing live. We started playing it straight-forward and then later we tried to upgrade it and came to the conclusion that it was best the way it was. It's a traditional song one can find in many different variantsm but I don't think any of them are as straight-forward and un-folky like our. I must say I find it quite amusing to start the album with such a song, in contrast to the calm folky introsong often found on other folk-metal records.

"Drikkevise" (Drinking Song) was written by Ivar right before, during and right after aLEP 2005. This is one of the most folky songs on the record and is a both joyous and melancolic tale of an old farmer's last trip to the pub after loosing his wife.

"Trú" (troth/faith/religion, one who is faithful) was written by Ivar with the intention that this should be a song as national-romantic as could be. It is therefore pompous and celebrates norwegian nature and folk without critique. With big choirs and images of mountains and fjords and the landscapes thought by many to be typically norwegian. It's catchy and even cheesy in it's pomposity. It's even got a guitar-solo.

"Skogens Vandrar" (The Forest Wanderer) is yet another song written by Ivar. This is the calmest song on the record. It's built around one theme played five times with different variations. The main character can be viewed as a creature somewhat similar to Snufkin. He is bound to no place and travel around at will. He's helpful and goodwilling, but will not be bound by this. After being in one place for too long and getting to know the people there he may suddenly disappear, never to come back.

"Daudeskaar" (The Mountain Pass of Death, as it can so cheesily be translated) is "the cold song of the album". The music is written by Ivar and the lyrics are penned by my own hand. In this song we take use of some elements that can be traced back to black metal. in the "refrain" one can hear high-pitched shrieks and a sort of rock'n'roll-ish take on harving. The story follows a couple as they are heading north to a fictive realm known as "The Land of the Brotherhood". On their way they must pass through "Daudeskaar", a haunted mountain pass.

"Venelite" is the secound song on the record that is a traditional tune. As opposed to "Eg rodde meg ut..", this has recieved a great deal more work. This song features guest vocals by the talentet, traditional singer Mari.

"Lykkejegaren" (or "The Fossicker") is a sort of bonus-track, for Venelite is a perfect ending track, but one day during recording, Gustav and I decided to record this. It turned out to be a proper sing-a-long-song, but we're still debating wether to keep all the vocal tracks. If we choose to keep them, we must at least re-record them without my sore, out-of-tune squakbox. The lyrics are partly based off "Life & times of Scrooge McDuck: Pt.8 White Agony Creek".

I hope this record contains something for everybody and that most people will find at least one song to their liking. I, myself, like all of them, but I'll buy any crap they release these days. In the next couple of days there'll be released a short mix with a short sample from each of the songs and tehn the record itself will be released during this or the next month.

PS. This is a shortened-down version of the norwegian version of this article. I didn't bother to translate it all.

A Sign of Life

About time for a life-sign here. The band is currently in the planning stages for a proper demo-recording. We have approximately 13-15 song of which we deem 3-4 will be on the first demo. We do not wish to have too many songs on the first demo as the same songs will probably also end up on the first proper record. The songs we have picked are as follows: "Eg rodde meg ut.." (I rowed out...) which is a short old folksong somewhat out of style from the rest that should work perfectly as an intro. "Drikkevise" (Drinking Song) wich is a drinking song. This is the song from which we have already released a sample. "Trú" (Faith/Faithful) which is a national romantic song. Somewhat more pompous that the other songs. As is in style with most other romantic songs. "Skogens Vandrar" (The Forest Wanderer) which is a sad acoustic song about the farewell of a son of nature. "Venelite" (Fair Little Maid) which is the last song we played on the John Dee-concert and also the only one of those song that has been kept in the repertoire. The lyrics are an old folksong. The music has changed somewhat since the gig.
